Duke Lung Transplant Friends News
September 1, 2008

Dear Duke Lung Transplant Patients and Caregivers;

As many of you are aware, I have been appointed as the Meical Director for the lung and heart-lung transplant programs at Duke effective July 1, 2008.  I am very excited about this opportunity and looking forward to following the tradition of excellence that has been set by Dr. Scott Palmer.  Over the last several years, Duke has become one of the most successful lung transplant programs in the world.  We are consistently one of the  largest volume lung transplant centers in the country and have been recognized by UNOS for significantly better survival among our patients than other national programs.  In addition, our group continues to be an international leader in translational and clinical research related to lung transplantation.  Scott has been an outstanding mentor and I am excited to work with him in our new roles.  Scott will continue to be clinically active within the program while he assures the role of Scientific Director leading the research efforts of our group.  I am hoping to follow in Scott’s footsteps and lead the Duke lung transplant program to even greater heights.

We have performed more than 750 lung transplants at Duke since 1995 and I plan to maintain our position as a national and international leader.  Over the next several years we hope to expand the number of patients we help with a life saving transplant.  In addition, our team will continue to strive for the highest quality outcomes by providing our patients with the best quality of care available.  Finally, I hope to improve the quality of service we are able to provide to our patients and referring providers.  While I am proud of all our accomplishments, I recognize opportunities to improve and provide even better care for all of our patients.

Over the last year, we have welcomed several new lung transplant coordinators to our group and tried to improve our procedures within the lung transplant office.  We have also had some changes amongst the physician staff.  Dr. Eu has left the transplant team to focus on his research, Dr. Steele has taken over the Monday clinic, and Dr. Tereza Martinu has joined our group.  Overall, we have an outstanding group of physicians and nurses dedicated to transplant.  Hopefully, these changes will allow us to best meet the needs of our patients and plan for future growth.  As one step to improving our communications with you, please see the attach letter that explains some of the progress we have made in our lung transplant office and clinics.

I would like to thank you for selecting Duke as your transplant center and for the opportunity to participate in your care.  While I am proud of our accomplishments and the care we have provided, I am looking forward to even greater things from the Duke Transplant program in the next several years.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns as we move forward with this leadership transition.  We continue to have an outstanding multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurse coordinators, physical therapists and many other care providers that will continue to work to serve you and your health care needs.  I wish you all continued good health and look forward to seeing you again soon.

Sincerely,

David Zaas, MD
