I met Jack in October 1962 and married him just six weeks later. I thought I was in love but only 43 years with Jack could teach me about real true love!
He was constantly looking for bigger and better things for us. But he worked too hard and worried too much and always had a long list of what needed to be done to make our life “perfect”. Then Jack got sick and our life changed, never to be the same again.
He went from total control to no control. He was extremely sick and was on oxygen 24/7. At 58 they told us that without a transplant he would die. He was determined to find the best transplant center available. We lived in Florida at the time but were committed to going anywhere in the country to find the best. After much internet searching and statistic studying, Jack felt Duke was the answer.
Dr. Duane Davis performed his single lung transplant December 8, 1998, and Jack went on to be cared for by Dr. Scott Palmer. He went through the usual (rejections and multiple bouts of CMV) the first year. We did the PIC lines with the IV’s several times and I learned to give weekly injections to correct his white blood count. We had some scarey times, but all in all, we were truly blessed. Jack could have been a poster boy for lung transplants, as after the first year, he was so well for so long. We enjoyed each and every day. We traveled, we laughed and we loved.
Our miracle lasted seven years and what a miracle it was! Our lives were so much better when we stopped worrying about how we could make our life “perfect” and learned to really enjoy EVERY day as the gift from God that it is!
Then sadly, they told us Jack had cancer in his native lung. He faced the battle with the same fierce determination he always demonstrated, but on July 14, 2006, he lost his struggle.
There was never a day that went by that Jack and I were not grateful to Duke, Dr. Davis and Dr. Palmer who guided us so well. The journey would never have been as long or as healthy and happy without their vigilant care. Jack would want me to tell you.......if you have ever wondered if Duke is the right place for your transplant.......it is!
Jack was my world and I miss him terribly, but I will never forget how wonderful our life was for those extra seven years!!
