Duke Lung Transplant Articles
Nissen Fundoplication
(Stomach Wrap)

To Wrap or Not to Wrap
Extensive research has been done (primarily by Dr. Scott Palmer et al) about acid reflux being a cause of Chronic Rejection (BO - Bronchiolitis Obliterans).  One "solution" that has been offered to prevent this avenue of potential loss of transplanted lungs to BO is the Nissen Fundoplication.  Although there remains much controversy surrounding this “solution”, Duke lung transplant patients who have evidence of acid reflux before lung transplant are encouraged to also have the Nissen to prevent BO and potential loss of the newly transplanted lungs.

Here you will find a series of articles presented by Duke Lung Transplant patients who have had the Nissen “Stomach Wrap” surgery.  These articles will contain each patients personal experience with the surgery experience along with the recovery process.

You will also find here links to articles and additional information about the Nissen that we hope you will find helpful.  Please direct any questions you may have to your transplant team and Dr. Carlos Marroquin at Duke.

Please note:  These articles are personal experiences and are not to be construed as medical advice.
